The Colorful (but Kinda Gross) Gum Wall in Seattle
Visit a wall covered in chewed gum? Ew! Well, yeah, but it’s also pretty awesome. I often complain about how we “just can’t have nice things” due to lazy and disrespectful people, but, this time, those people started something iconic: Seattle’s Gum Wall.

Located at the Market Theater at Seattle’s famed Pike Place Market, the wall is a definite tourist draw. Patrons of the theater began the tradition about 25 years ago, and were relentless. The theater workers quickly gave up the efforts to keep the wall clean.

The wall was thoroughly cleaned in 2015, so we were worried that there may be no sight for us to see on our 2016 trip, but, of course, the gum was back with a vengeance.
If you forget to take gum with you, the newspaper stand nearby will gladly sell you a pack. Add your gum and saliva to this piece of art! Just to say you did!
The alley is not very big, so it can get quite crowded with tourists taking selfies in front of the gum. Photographers seem to love this spot for senior and wedding photography as well.
The wall is colorful and, honestly, it’s really pretty from a distance. Just remember not to get to close! One: It does have a smell. And two: You wouldn’t want to back up and get your hair caught in that mess!

Why do we love this place? Well, I think it’s because people have taken something so ordinary and turned it into something extraordinary that we can all add to and be a part of. Chewed gum turned masterpiece.
