Amazing Burgers at Kooky Canuck in Memphis, Tennessee
We had seen the Kooky Canuck restaurant before while visiting the downtown area (seeing shows at the Orpheum and such), but after seeing its “Kookamonga Challenge” attempted on Man Versus Food on the Travel Channel, we knew we’d have to pay this place a visit.
Just what is a “Kookamonga Challenge”? Well, it’s a chance at fame and free food IF you can manage to down a 7.5 pound burger by yourself in less than an hour. SEVEN AND A HALF POUNDS. You read that correctly. According to the Kooky Canuck website, that makes it a meal of about 12,000 calories. Guys, this burger has to have a specially-made bun and has an ENTIRE pickle on top. For garnish. They are NOT playing around with this challenge!
I won’t lie…the challenge intimidated us. We cowered away, feeling defeated for not even attempting it, but we perked right back up as soon as we saw the menu. I knew to expect excellent burgers and, with a name like “Kooky Canuck,” I think it goes without saying that I’d just have to try something with a Canadian twist!
Picking out a meal at a new restaurant is serious business. I always want a signature dish, but it’s even better if it’s a dish that I’ve never tried. What did I come up with?
BAM! The Poutine Burger in all of its cheese and gravy goodness.
You can just stare at the photo for awhile. Try not to drool on the keyboard. And guess what….tastes better than it looks. I’m not kidding.
The burger itself was great, but adding on fries, cheese curds, and quite possibly the best gravy ever? C’mon! Heaven in a burger.
I scraped every drop of gravy off the plate. Also, the fries are a homestyle, but were not greasy at all! Miracle!

Mark chose the Canadian Burger with a SLAB of Canadian bacon, caramelized onions, and a yummy sweet barbecue sauce. Of course I had to steal a bite! That’s the perk of trying new food WITH someone. Order two things, try them both.
Even after all the food we just ate, the Deep Dish Cookie a la Mode had been calling our names. Ordered it. Ate it. Why is there no photo? We were so excited that we basically inhaled it as soon as it hit the table.
All calorie counting efforts went out the window. Worth it? Totally. Will we go back? Definitely. Will we try to conquer the Kookamonga Challenge? …I’ll think about it.
