In-N-Out Burger: A Regional Chain with A Worldwide Reputation
In-N-Out Burger is a restaurant that we kept reading about over and over. Its hamburgers are one of those posted-too-often pictures on Instagram.
Is there really a burger place that’s worth fussing over like that? Or is it just one of those fad places where people want to be seen? We decided to find out for ourselves on our trip to Los Angeles.
In-N-Out is a regional chain that got its beginnings in California in 1948 and is known for quality products AND for being the first fast food joint with full drive-thru service. Its founder, Harry Snyder, created the first two-way speaker box for taking orders. How awesome is that? Visionary!

It seems that In-N-Out is one of those places that gives you cravings that you just can’t fight. The cravings are for their delicious, fresh items that just hit the spot at all hours of the day and night.
Knowing this, we figured we’d be eating there more than once, so we booked a hotel that just so happened to have an In-N-Out next door! I would say it was within walking distance, but it was a walk over and a waddle back!
As we made our way over for dinner the first night of our stay in L.A., we immediately noticed the long line of cars in the drive-thru line and the line of people out the door of the restaurant.
We’re no strangers to long lines, especially when quality food is involved, so we were not deterred in the least.
We joined in line with locals and tourists alike. A few guys were even posing for selfies with the employees as they were cleaning and gathering food trays. The employees seemed super happy to be there, to smile, and to accommodate the tourists!
The line actually moved unbelievably fast, by the way!
Whenever we visit a restaurant for the first time, we always hope that we order the right thing. Some places have overwhelming menus. Not In-N-Out!
The menu is super simple, with their staples being fresh burgers, hand-cut fries, and simple variations of the two. Easy enough, right?

We quickly realized that the burgers are HUGE! They stand up super tall, and all the fixins’ looked so great that I knew I wouldn’t be picking anything off. Basically, I didn’t think I could handle the “Double Double” with its TWO patties and two pieces of cheese!
We both opted for the single burger (which comes with lettuce, tomato, and onion) and an order of fries, both “Animal Style,” which adds melted cheese, grilled onions, and extra spread (their secret sauce which is similar to a thousand island dressing).
As we were ordering, I thought it was awesome to watch as an employee was chopping whole potatoes into fries right there behind the counter. Fresh enough for ya? I think so!
The cashier was more than happy to help us with our order. She was so incredibly friendly and actually seemed overjoyed that we were visiting an In-N-Out for the very first time.
She wanted to know where we were visiting from and genuinely wanted to make sure that we enjoyed our first In-N-Out meal!
So, just what was our verdict? The meal was absolutely delicious. The burger was juicy, and the meat (and everything else on the burger!) was so fresh!
I suppose this is an easy thing to do with such a fan base! Nothing in that restaurant would sit around very long before someone eats it!
While we both loved the burger and the fries, I have to say that the fries were probably my favorite. With their secret sauce….just perfect! I loved them so much that I had to have an order the next day as well!

Overall, we were very impressed, and we have definitely craved In-N-Out food since we’ve been back home in Mississippi. We know they are slowly opening more restaurants across the US, but, at the time of this writing, the closest they’ve come to us so far is Texas!
Also, be sure to look for the crossed palm trees, which can be found around every In-N-Out restaurant! You can see them in the photo below!
Come on out to Mississippi, In-N-Out! We’re waitin’ on ya!
